Abstract
The purpose of this study was to screen community-dwelling elderly with dysphagia risk and to identify the influencing factors of their dysphagia risk. The sample consisted of 302 older adults recruited by convenience sampling from one senior citizens` university, two community social welfare centers, and three senior centers in Seoul. The results are as follows. 1. the mean score for dysphagia risk was 7.53(SD=6.47) and 170 participants(56.3%) were at dysphagia risk. 2. 75 years or older, denture use, neurological diseases, digestive diseases, and depression symptom were significant predictors of their dysphagia risk. Based on these findings, the dysphagia risk was prevalent in older people who are otherwise living independently in the community. We should be concerned about dysphagia risk in the community-dwelling elderly and develop intervention program for improvement their swallowing function.
